You may wonder why your child needs to be seen every year by his or her doctor or they are healthy.
Well child checkups are the best time to go over important topics such as your child's development, nutrition, safety, and your child and family's emotional well-being. There are numerous benefits to having your child seen yearly such as:
Yearly checkups may or may not include routine vaccinations that prevent your child from severe illnesses. They include screenings such as hearing and vision exams, blood tests to check lead, iron, and cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and urinalysis. These tests may find an underlying condition that does not present symptoms early on.
- Tracking Growth and Development
At each well visit your child's height and weight are plotted on an age-appropriate growth curve and compared to their previous visits to ensure they are growing appropriately. Checkups are an important time to discuss your child's milestones, social behaviors, and learning.
- Raising concerns
Checkups are a good time to bring up parent's concerns regarding their child, such as their development, behavior, sleep patterns, eating, or social interactions. It is a good idea to make a list of questions to bring with you so they can be addressed at the checkup.
One popular question parents have is: Are yearly checkups covered by my insurance? The answer is yes! Under the Affordable Care Act, preventative visits are covered at 100% with the exception of self-funded policies. If you are unsure if you have a self-funded policy, you can check with your employer or insurance company.
Yearly checkups at your child's Pediatrician are important, no matter what the age. It sets them up for a healthier lifestyle later in life and shows them that going to the doctor is important, even when they aren't sick.
